Brief Description

This module explores the theological, historical, political and cultural underpinnings of sports ministry both in the UK and overseas

Indicative Syllabus

The module provides a theoretical framework within which sports ministry can be located both in a theological and a socio-political sense. The historical development of domestic sports ministry and leisure provision is analysed in order to track the emergence of the two fields. This enables students to compare and critique competing rationales for sports development and sports ministry work. Case studies of historic and contemporary sports ministry work are then examined in order to apply key theoretical concepts to established practice, and to critique the motives and approaches of stakeholder groups.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:

1) analyse the contested theological and ideological terrain of sports mission;

2) critically examine the implications for sports mission of different theological and paradigmatic approaches;

3) locate competing rationales for sports development and sports mission work in the context of socio-political theory; and

4) evaluate the purpose of contemporary sports mission programmes.
