Brief Description

Once considered the domain of the ‘enthusiastic amateur’ coaching in the UK has recently entered a period of radical development in line with the changing profile and uses of sport and physical activity in British society. In its selection of a range of contemporary issues, this module reviews the reciprocal influence of historically situated ideology, policy and practice in sport and society at large on the past, present and future landscape of sports coaching. Coaching is presented as a dynamic and multifaceted activity with significance for enquiry at societal, interpersonal and intrapersonal levels. The module adopts the view that critical thinking about contemporary issues associated with the practice and processes of sports coaching are enriched by insights gained from a range of disciplinary and methodological perspectives. 

Indicative Syllabus

The exact content of this module will evolve to embrace the changing nature of contemporary issues associated with sports coaching in the UK. Exemplar topics include;

  • The conceptualisation and socio-historical development of sports coaching and associated contemporary issues in the UK. A comparison of coaching systems and practice internationally
  • The professionalization of sports coaching: a review of developments in coach employment, management, education and continuing professional development
  • The evolution and generation of knowledge and research in sports coaching. Diversity in coaching contexts and implications for ‘effectiveness’ in coaching practice
  • Considering the contribution of sport science, sport medicine, performance lifestyle, strength and conditioning, and technology to contemporary coaching.
  • The place of continuing professional development, coaching philosophy, reflective practice, mentoring and personal career planning in the holistic development of the coach
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: -

  1. Recognise a range of contemporary issues in sports coaching and demonstrate a critical awareness of factors associated with selected issues
  2. Synthesise information to explain how the socio-historical factors in the development of sport have influenced the landscape of sports coaching in the UK
  3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the diversity of sports coaching contexts and the contested concept of coaching effectiveness therein    
  4. Demonstrate an advanced appreciation of the opportunities and challenges associated with coach development such as; continuing professional development, coaching philosophies, reflective practice and mentoring
  5. Demonstrate effective group working skills
  6. Engage in effective academic and professional communication via oral and written media


Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff / student contact: 15%
Student directed learning: 85%  
Total study time: 300 hours

The module will be delivered using a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods. Example activities may include: class-based-lectures led by staff, student-led mini presentations, open discussion forum, formal debates, guest speakers and practical coaching sessions. Students will be expected to engage in significant independent study. The variety of activities used is intended to facilitate engagement, contribute to a positive learning experience and promote industry relevant skills.
