Brief Description

The module provides the student with the opportunity to gain an advanced critical understanding of the psychological factors both influencing and determining performance. Building on a strong theoretical foundation, students will explore a range of psychological skills and their application.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will focus on the following 2 areas:

Performance:

  • Motor skills
  • Practise techniques
  • Cognition, learning & perception

Psychological Skills:

  • Arousal & anxiety
  • Confidence
  • Coping
  • Goal setting, imagery, biofeedback, stress inoculation
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding

  1. Critically evaluate and apply knowledge of key contemporary issues that impact on performance psychology.
  2. Critically analyse the cognitive, learning and perceptual aspects of performance psychology and apply in-depth knowledge of motor programme development and skill acquisition to enhance learning
  3. Critically appraise a range of psychological skills and their application in a number of different contexts
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical underpinning for specific psychological skills

ii. Skills. 

  1. Exhibit technical writing skills.
  2. Apply theory to practice within a specialised context


Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff / student contact: 15% including lectures and seminars
Student directed learning: 85%, including tutorials
Total study time: 300 hours
