Brief Description Christian spirituality is a global issue with myriad local manifestations. This module aims to enlarge students’ understanding of spirituality and its contemporary significance. It will do this by examining critically several streams of Christian spirituality from different church-traditions and parts of the world and by considering the profitability of dialogue with non-Christian approaches to spirituality. Students will experience at least one type of Christian spirituality and reflect on that experience.
Indicative Syllabus • What is spirituality and why has it assumed its present importance in world-Christianity and world-religion?
• Characteristics and experience of such matters as
o Recent trends in Orthodox spirituality
o Recent trends in Catholic spirituality
o The revival of Celtic spirituality
o Charismatic spirituality
o Liberation spirituality
o Other ‘Third-World’ spiritualities
o Feminist spiritualities
o Spirituality and psychology
• Dialogue with one non-Christian spirituality: how profitable is it? is there likely to be a common spirituality?
Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

1) Articulate several understandings of spirituality and say which he/she prefers and why
2) Explain why spirituality is so important in world-Christianity and world-religion
3) Critically evaluate the spiritualities studied and experienced
4) Discuss the profitability of dialogue with a non-Christian spirituality

Learning and Teaching Activities Workshop/seminar plus experiential/placement opportunity to facilitate reflection on Christian spirituality
