Brief Description | This module will explore the relationship between major issues in mission/ missiology, and sport, and major issues for mission arising out of sport. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will begin by introducing students to the field of mission / missiology. It will then consider the issues raised for engagement in sport as mission by such missiological subjects as the relationship between Christianity and other religions, ways in which the understanding of mission, and so of the relationship between mission and sport, have changed, the decentred yet interconnected nature of mission and sport, evangelism as proclamation and social action and sport, how to relate the gospel and Christianity in general to sporting culture, Christianity, sport and care of the environment, issues of justice, peace and sport, and sharing in partnership in sport. It will conclude by examining major issues for Christian ethics arising out of sport, in particular competition, the use of violence and sport as leisure. |
Learning Outcomes | On completion of the module students will be able to: 1) Understand and analyse at an advanced level the major issues raised in and by mission / missiology and by sport itself for engagement in sport as mission. |
Learning and Teaching Activities | The module will be delivered primarily through face-to-face discussion of set reading, the discussion to be led either by the tutors or by students. |
