Brief Description | An exploration of the historical, political and cultural underpinnings of domestic mission and sports development. This module will consider the historic relationship between these two spheres of activity, and the roles and motives of the institutions involved. The module also facilitates an analysis of the nature and role of sports development work in the context of state intervention in leisure and recreation, providing a theoretical underpinning for the critical analysis of sports development in general and sports mission in particular. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module begins by outlining a theoretical framework which locates the emergent field of sports mission in a socio-political context. The historical development of domestic mission and leisure provision is then analysed in order to track the emergence of the two fields. This enables participants to compare and critique competing rationales for sports development and sports mission work. Case studies of historic and contemporary sports mission are then examined in order to apply the key theoretical concepts to established practice, and to critique the motives and approaches of the key stakeholder groups. |
