Brief Description This module is designed to offer students the opportunity to experience an extended visit in the company of other students to a city or area of historic significance in the study of religion.
Indicative Syllabus The module will comprise the following: Students will undertake preliminary research that introduces the location to be visited and its historical and religious significance. Students will be provided with a course booklet that gives reading and preliminary study material on all the places visited. A University VLE site will be developed to support this preliminary research.

The content of the study visit will be determined by the location.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
a) Explain and assess the role that ‘place’ has within religious traditions
b) Recognise and appreciate the significance of such features as landscape and architecture to religious belief and practice.
c) Integrate their lecture-based understanding with their experiences on the trip..



ii. Skills
On completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate:
a) An ability to summarise their intellectual and analytic coursework reading
b) An ability to relate their experience of visiting monuments and locations to knowledge gained through reading.
c) A critical approach to the representation of religious history  
d) The ability to write an assignment following the required scholarly conventions.
e) The use of the Internet for research study purposes and the University VLE for online communication.
f) Semi-independent learning strategies

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/Student contact time: 20%
Student private study: 80% (including reading and assignment writing)
