Brief Description

The aims of the module are to:
1        enable students to develop skills in strategic thinking
2        facilitate professional development as a leader/manager
3        explore current issues, themes and debates in leadership and management in the students’ professional or ministerial context including ethical issues

Indicative Syllabus This module will develop skills in strategic thinking and its application into the work context. It will identify, explore and analyse key issues, themes and debates around leadership and encourage reflection on self as a leader and continuing professional development.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding
a)       understand and apply approaches to strategic thinking in work context
b)       critically analyse a range of perspectives on leadership to both context and self
c)       articulate and discuss some of the current themes, issues and debates faced in work contexts and develop appropriate responses to them

Skills
d)       identify and develop a plan for ongoing professional development.

Staff / student contact: 10% (lectures, seminars, role play, exercises, simulations)
Student directed learning: 90%
