Brief Description This module will introduce advanced classic social psychological theory and more modern social cognitive psychological theory relating to stereotypes and stereotyping. Theories will be applied to relevant social issues and current world events.
Indicative Syllabus 1. Classic theories of stereotypes 2. Psychodynamic, sociocultural and implicit personality theories 3. Social cognitive approaches (I) 4. Social cognitive approaches (II) 5. Stereotype content 6. Stereotype accuracy (I) 7. Stereotype accuracy (II) 8. Consequences of stereotyping 9. Being the target of stereotypes 10. Regulating social stereotypes 11. Changing social stereotypes 12. Future directions
Learning Outcomes Knowledge At the end of the module, students should be able to • Demonstrate an knowledge of the development from classical stereotype literature to more modern social cognitive theorizing • Demonstrate a knowledge of issues surrounding the content and accuracy of stereotypes • Demonstrate knowledge of issues surrounding stereotype formation, activation, application, regulation and change. • Demonstrate a knowledge of future directions in stereotype research and theories

At the end of the module, students should be able to • Critically assess contemporary research and theorizing in social psychology. • Critically relate theory and research to social issues surrounding stereotype formation, activation, application, content, accuracy, regulation and change. • Discuss issues surrounding the consequences of stereotyping and the directions of future research.
