Brief Description This module focuses on sex and gender from a variety of theoretical perspectives in psychology. It then goes on to describe 'gender development' across the lifespan before examining the impact of gender on several areas of human interaction. These include the application of the psychology of sex and gender to sexuality, mental health, sex crimes and the body.
Indicative Syllabus Perspectives in psychology towards sex and gender, essentialist and constructionist accounts of sex and gender.
Feminism and psychology, the range of feminist perspectives.
Historical antecedents of sex and gender within psychology.
Heterosexualities and homosexualities.
The postmodern challenge.
A range of applied perspectives on sex and gender.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) have increased knowledge of psychological theory and research on sex and gender.
b) can distinguish between different definitions of sex and gender.
c) can analyse critically the implications of adopting different approaches to studying sex and gender.
d) can apply theory and research on sex and gender to professional and interpersonal settings.

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they have developed: precision in the use of terminology relating to sex and gender. critical reading skills appropriate to the area of study. skills of research, planning and writing. skills in critical argument and debate.
