PY306: Further Statistics and Investigative Methods

Module Title Further Statistics and Investigative Methods
Module Code PY306
Module Tutor Dai Jones
School Natural and Social Sciences
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites Before taking this module you must pass PY208
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description This module deepens students' understanding of statistical and methodological issues. The module takes a critical stance to both the logic of experimental design and the nature of statistics in Psychology. Where possible students will be encouraged to work in small teams to consider problems analogous to their investigation topics. Recommended for Joint students taking PY331/338 utilising experimental/psychometric methods.
Indicative Syllabus Critical understanding of experimental and quasi-experimental designs including issues such as the nature of artifacts and biases in Psychological research, the cohort effect in quasi-experimental designs.
The limitations of significance testing, the relationship between significance testing and size of effect and issues surrounding meta-analysis.
Multiple regression, the links between regression and ANOVA, problems with making causal statements from regression analyses. Factor analysis, what it does and does not tell the researcher about underlying 'structure' to data.
Critical reading of research reports.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) Understand the strengths and weaknesses of psychological research based on experimental, quasi-experimental and correlational designs.
b) Understand how to use statistical techniques within Psychology in a critical and rigorous way.
c) Understand the limitations of a range of statistical techniques.

ii. Skills

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) produce a critical reading of a psychology research report based on design and statistical issues.
b) carefully and competently carry out research in a quantitative paradigm.

c) critically report on psychology investigations.
