Brief Description The module critically examines the role of the educational psychologist and explores the relationships between theory and practice within the context of the British educational system.
Indicative Syllabus The nature of the British educational system and the relevance of psychology to that system.
Methods of investigation within educational psychology: psychometric testing, observational techniques, interviewing, projective techniques. Problems with the methods of investigation.
Methods of intervention: behaviour modification, task analysis, conflict mediation, systems work, in-service training, counselling, evaluation. Problems with the methods of intervention.
Areas of work: learning difficulties; emotional and behavioural difficulties; autism; dyspraxia.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) Appreciate of the range of roles of the educational psychologist in the British educational system;
b) Are aware of the range of syndromes that fall under the remit of the educational psychologist;
c) Can appreciate the strengths and limitations of the aprroaches used by educational psychologists;



ii. Skills

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) Critically evaluate the implications of the practice of the educational psychologist for the education system and for the client;
b) Critically compare and contrast competing theoretical explanations for the syndromes faced by the educational psychologist;

c) Can select and justify suitable intervention techniques in different situations
