Brief Description | The module critically examines the role of the educational psychologist and explores the relationships between theory and practice within the context of the British educational system. |
Indicative Syllabus | The nature of the British educational system and the relevance of psychology to that system. Methods of investigation within educational psychology: psychometric testing, observational techniques, interviewing, projective techniques. Problems with the methods of investigation. Methods of intervention: behaviour modification, task analysis, conflict mediation, systems work, in-service training, counselling, evaluation. Problems with the methods of intervention. Areas of work: learning difficulties; emotional and behavioural difficulties; autism; dyspraxia. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) Appreciate of the range of roles of the educational psychologist in the British educational system; b) Are aware of the range of syndromes that fall under the remit of the educational psychologist; c) Can appreciate the strengths and limitations of the aprroaches used by educational psychologists;
