Brief Description | Taking a lifespan approach, this module investigates changes to psychological functioning throughout a person's development. Topics include development of the brain, physical growth, cognitive and language development as well as the development of social and interpersonal skills. |
Indicative Syllabus | General issues about the nature of development (nature-nurture, etc) Prenatal development Development of perception Physical growth Development of language and social skills Cognitive development Adolescence Development in adulthood Developmental psychopathologies |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be: a) able to identify the range of problems studied by developmental psychologists b) familiar with the key developmental theories c) familiar with the current state of data and their explanations of selected topics from infancy to adulthood d) familiar with the variety of investigative methods used in developmental research ii. Skills By the end of the module, students should be able to: a) identify appropriate investigative techniques for studying the lifespan b) write a clear, appropriately referenced essay on both key theorists and/or investigative approaches, adhering to the established norms of the field |
