Brief Description This module will investigate individual differences in humans along intellectual and personality dimensions. Different theories of personality and intelligence will be explored and the limitations of the measurement of these dimensions will be studied.
Indicative Syllabus Individual differences on intellectual and personality dimensions: intensity and extent of such differences
Examination of: psychodynamic, behavioural, phenomenological, trait and cognitive theories of personality
Examination of various definitions and theories and models of intelligence
The measurement of personality and intelligence, including inventories, projective tests, aptitude, ability and achievement measures
Reliability and validity of these measurements
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) knowledge of approaches to the study of both personality and intelligence
b) understanding of key debates in individual differences, including nature/nurture; nomothetic/idiographic; type/trait
c) familiarity with psychological measurement of both personality and intelligence
d) understanding of the limitations of psychometric approaches



ii. Skills
Successful students will be able to demonstrate:
a) a range of transferable skills, particularly essay writing, literature finding and independent reading
b) the ability to develop and maintain an academic argument
c) the ability to use evidence appropriately in support of academic arguments
d) understanding in designing a range of psychological measuring instruments, particularly self-report measures
