PY210: Perception, Learning and Memory

Module Title Perception, Learning and Memory
Module Code PY210
Module Tutor Graham Edgar
School Natural and Social Sciences
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 5
Pre-requisites Before taking this module you must ( pass PY109 or pass PY111 ) and pass PY107
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description This module covers key theoretical approaches, research and methods in regard to perception, learning, and memory-basic processes that allow us to register and acquire "information" about the outside world. Knowledge of these functions is vital to an understanding of human cognition. The first half of the module covers primary processing in all five sensory-perceptual systems, as well as the links between sensory-perceptual functions and cognitive precessing. The second half of the module focuses on the storage and retrieval of information for both temporary and long-term memory, as well as the associated patterns of change in overt behaviour (learning). The relationship between emotion and memory will also be considered. There will also be an elementary introduction to cognitive neuropsychological approaches, in regard to the implications of studies of amnesia for models of human memory.
Indicative Syllabus a) physiological bases of perception and cognition
b) visual, auditory, tactile-haptic, olfactory, gustatory sensation and perception
c) attention
d) sensory memory
e) working memory
f) long term memory
g) knowledge organisation (including categorization)
h) basic patterns and principals in regard to learning or information acquisition

i) links between emotion and memory

j) implicit learning
k) neuropsychological perspectives on memory

Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:

a) Appreciate the range of issues raised in considering perception, learning and memory;

b) Have knowledge of the theoretical approaches used in addressing these issues;

c) Understand the techniques of investigation used to investigate perception and memory

d) Have knowledge of key research findings and conclusions regarding perception and memory

ii. Skills

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:

a) Critically evaluate competing theories of and explanations for the phenomena observed in the areas of perception, learning and memory;

b) Critically evaluate techniques used to investigate the psychology of perception, learning and memory;

c) Critically evaluate the outcomes of research into perception, learning and memory, relating these outcomes to theoretical models.
