Brief Description | Building on knowledge gained in PY111, this module further develops the knowledge of statistical and experimental techniques necessary for carrying out a psychology investigation at level III. |
Indicative Syllabus | There will be extensive use of computers to demonstrate statistical techniques, and to plot and analyse data. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be explored and their relative strengths and weaknesses discussed. Quantitative approaches will include parametric tests up to, and including, ANOVA and standard multiple regression. Qualitative approaches will include exploration of a broad range of approaches, which may include but is not limited to observational techniques, textual analysis, and the Action Research Cycle. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate: a) an understanding of statistical tests including when to use which test, the differences between tests for difference and tests for association b) an awareness of design issues in quantitative investigation in psychology. c) an awareness of the issues and techniques involved in qualitative methods ii. Skills A development of the skills from PY111 in designing, analysing and reporting experiments. Skills in qualitative interpretation. Skills in the use of computer packages for statistical analysis. |
