Brief Description This module will examine ways to understand and critically examine contemporary media culture.
Indicative Syllabus The module will examine contemporary media culture and students will be required to consider the idea that images construct the fabric of everyday life and construct our identities and notions of truth, knowledge and reality. Particular attention will be given to the idea that such a culture can be described as 'postmodern' and what this might mean. Students will be required to analyse a variety of media representations using a range of methodologies including semiology, ideology, hegemony, gender and power.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) understand the concepts of semiology, ideology and hegemony
b) have gained a critical understanding of the relationship of the individual to media culture in contemporary society
c) have gained a critical understanding of the relationships of cultural and political truths and values to the media, its representations and institutions
d) have gained a critical understanding of postmodernism

ii. Skills
Students should be able to apply a range of analytical methodologies to the study of media culture, and develop their skills in independent learning.
