Brief Description

This module aims to assist undergraduates to become affective practitioners in a range of mentoring and tutoring contexts both within the workplace and other learning environments.  The module is about empowering people to support others.

Indicative Syllabus

The core content will be an investigation of students’ own behavioural patterns to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their capabilities and potential.  They will explore how and why people react to situations in the way they do and the nature of interactions between individuals in the support situation, focusing on communication, listening, questioning and problem solving.  They will develop expertise in the use of tools to help support the development of themselves and others, e.g. Ground rules and exit strategies, time management, action planning and goal setting.

Customised elements of the programme can be made available.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
1)      Understand the needs of individuals in the context of a mentoring/tutoring relationship.
2)      Understand the significance of different learning styles
3)      Reflect on the transformative value of mentoring
4)      Understand the legal and ethical issues relating to mentoring/tutoring relationships
5)      Critically reflect upon their own practice of mentoring /tutoring.
6)      Demonstrate specialist knowledge of the sector in which they are mentoring.
