Brief Description

This module aims to assist postgraduates to become effective practitioners in a range of mentoring and coaching contexts both within the workplace and other learning environments.  The module is about empowering people to support others.

Indicative Syllabus

The core content will be an investigation of students’ own behavioural patterns to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their capabilities and potential.  They will explore how and why people react to situations in the way they do and the nature of interactions between individuals in the support situation, focusing on communication, listening, questioning and problem solving.

The module provides the opportunity to apply coaching and mentoring methodologies of personal profiling and personal development planning, which are then translated into rigorous intellectual study through reflective practice and critical analysis. The student may choose to focus on either mentoring or coaching.

The student will develop expertise in the use of tools to help support the development of themselves and others, e.g. Ground rules and exit strategies, time management, action planning, when to refer clients to other professionals and goal setting.

The student will be encouraged to demonstrate sound judgement, self direction, ability to solve complex problems and leadership skills.
