Brief Description

This module aims to introduce elements of philosophy and epistemology in order to develop skills in critical thinking and apply these to contemporary issues facing the playwork sector. Playwork exists alongside a constantly changing policy and political environment and as such, contemporary issues in playwork are both within, and around, the sector. This module provides students with the opportunity to identify key contemporary issues that are pertinent to playwork, and draw on material in the module to present critiques of these issues, debating them with others on the module. Students will be expected to draw on the knowledge and skills they have gained earlier in the course and through other experiential learning as they debate important issues within playwork and related areas.

Indicative Syllabus

The module introduces a variety of approaches to epistemology (for example, normative, social or feminist epistemology) in order to question what knowledge might be and how we know what we know. Alongside this, approaches to the analysis and interpretation of research are introduced, including analysing and developing arguments. Students will then generate topics for further exploration and will support each other in developing proposals.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:

1.      Compare and contrast approaches to epistemology
2.      Apply key concepts in epistemology to critical analysis of research reports or truth claims
