Brief Description This module provides the opportunity to fully consider, and explore, how documentary photographers and photojournalists can identify audiences, and effectively construct and disseminate their work in order to engage with those audiences. It is envisaged that the outcome will be a body of practical photographic work the presentation of which is informed by research and theoretical debate.
Indicative Syllabus Students will be expected to negotiate, and thereafter initiate their brief with the advice of the module tutor. Briefs should provide the opportunity to develop a subject of personal interest. The proposal will be required in word-processed format accompanied by initial research, layouts, sketches, roughs or dummies as appropriate; this proposal will form part of the assessable work. Students will engage in individual or collaborative practices, and experiment with the potential of multi-media or cross-media presentation of photographic work; this may involve presentation of work in unique publications, magazines, through electronic publication, as site/community related/specific exhibitions, archival prints, billboards, tape-slide, etc. There is an emphasis upon considered process as much as final product and the relationship of concept, technique, content and messages communicated will be discussed. Through practical exploration students address the way in which personal meaning can be informed and stimulated by differing conceptual and technical strategies for dissemination of photographic work. Students are required to document and evidence their feasibility research, contextual research, process-led activity and all practical outcomes.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
a) a variety of methodologies for presenting photography and an understanding and awareness of a range of publishing businesses
b) have an awareness of the different roles and functions in industry such as curator, publisher, critic, audience, etc.
c) inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches to the presentation of work
d) the presentation of the photograph in public spaces, and historical and contemporary contexts for site, or community, specific practices within documentary photography
e) the potential to realise photographic practice within unfamiliar or innovative conceptual or technical frameworks

ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate skills in:
a) taking on and publishing (in its widest sense, including exhibiting, etc.) their own or other people's photographic work
b) writing a comparative critique of exhibitions.
c) obtaining and analysing costings, budgets, schedules, sponsorship, P.R., press releases, catalogues, sales, etc.
d) developing and applying conceptual strategies to support the effective dissemination of photographic work and intended messages.
