Brief Description This module provides the opportunity to negotiate a self initiated practical brief around an agreed theme in order to produce a substantial photographic documentary story.
Indicative Syllabus

This module provides the opportunity to develop a photographic story on a theme that is of particular interest to the student. The tutor will be required to approve a written proposal (learning agreement) provided by the student prior to commencing practical project. The proposal should indicate the intended market for which the images are to be aimed. This may include a particular publication or publications. It could be a newspaper section, such as the weekend colour supplements, a website, a potential book or exhibition.

The subject matter should be interesting, and the technique should have potential to tell a story visually. A written piece is also required which will provide context and explanation suitable (at the minimum) to provide extended captions. This could include interviews.

The tutor should be kept informed of the anticipated timescale for each part of the work to be completed and must agree to any details regarding health and safety and ethical issues.

The equipment and choice of film/digital/format etc are to be negotiated with tutor through learning agreement.

Ideally students should begin planning and research at an early stage in advance of the module in order to gain necessary permissions and plan travel arrangements enabling them to use the actual module time productively to produce images.
