Brief Description

The module provides a student with the opportunity to undertake an independent practice-based enquiry, which addresses the teaching and learning needs of the individual and of their school. The programme includes: University based lectures and seminars, subject pathway sessions and school-based seminars, tutorials. Enquiry into practice will be undertaken at the trainee’s Parent School and located within a student’s subject specialism. 

Indicative Syllabus

The details of the enquiry are to be approved on an individual basis following consultation with the Training Manager and Subject Leader. All students will be required to engage with elements of research design and methodology relevant to the focus of their study. Through and individual subject focus, students will also be required to demonstrate through their study an understanding of whole school initiatives and/or national policies and how they impact on teaching and learning within their subject area and their development and practice as teachers.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes will be specific to the particular school-based project undertaken.  On passing this module all students should be able to:

1.     negotiate a subject to study that addresses an area for development within the school / department development plan;

2.     plan, implement and critically evaluate a study that has teaching and learning as its focus;

3.     complete a study that reflects a balance between academic rigor and professional relevance;

4.     demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways in which national/school policies impact on the work of teachers and students;

5.     apply knowledge and understanding of research methods and tools appropriate for the ‘teacher as researcher’;

6.     achieve other learning outcomes specific to the negotiated area of study.

Students assessed at Masters level will also be able to demonstrate that they have:

1.     undertaken initial research culminating in a negotiated study that addresses an area for development within the school / department development plan;

2.     investigated appropriate literature , and research methods to instigate , implement and critically analyse  a study based within their own subject specialism, with teaching and learning as its focus;

3.     completed a reflective study following extensive reading which exemplifies the role of the reflective practitioner, showing detailed evidence of the balance and impact of academic rigor and professional relevance;

4.     gained an enhanced and critical awareness of key professional issues resulting from the impact made by national/school policies on the work of teachers and students, having researched appropriate literature;

5.     commented upon research methodology and critically analysed a range of research methods and tools appropriate for the "teacher as researcher";

6.     negotiated and achieved other learning outcomes specific to the chosen area of study, at M level.



Learning and Teaching Activities

This will include: attendance at University lectures and seminars, school-based seminars and individual tutorials, internet sources and INSET.
