Brief Description The module aims to allow trainee teachers to build on and consolidate their knowledge, understanding and teaching skills developed in PGP301 and other PGP modules. The trainee teachers undertake a Block School Experience consisting of 7 serial days followed by a 6-week block; by the end of this placement student teachers will be expected to undertake planned teaching for approximately 75% of the teaching week. Additionally, they will be involved in administrative procedures and school duties.. Some students may be offered the opportunity for an urban BSE in London
Indicative Syllabus Whilst in school they are supported by their class teacher and student mentor. They are assigned a Link Tutor form the university who will visit the 4 times to observe their teaching, scrutinise their files, discuss their progress with school staff and offer support and advice. Prior to the final 5 week block the Link Tutor will meet with the trainee teacher to approve detailed plans for teaching and complete the Midpoint Review form. Trainee teachers will not proceed to the second part if their preparation is considered unsatisfactory. Successful completion of this module indicates that students can demonstrate that they are able to meet all of the QTS standards.
Learning Outcomes

Knowledge & Understanding

This module enables students to consolidate their professional knowledge and understanding, they will be able to demonstrate:

1) an understanding of the previous and following Key Stages;
2) effective preparation and research in order to deliver content knowledge within an appropriate planning, assessment and evaluation framework ensuring that the needs of all learners are met;
3) a well developed knowledge and understanding of the key issues in teaching and learning, pupil assessment and record keeping, classroom organisation and management, and the promotion of positive behaviour
4) an understanding of their professional roles and responsibilities, including the statutory frameworks relating to teachers’ responsibilities as part of the children’s workforce;
5) their understanding of the role of the teacher and how to identify continuing professional development for future study
6) a deeper insight into the role of the teacher as part of a multidisciplinary team, working in partnership with a range of agencies and stakeholders, including parents and carers.
7) an understanding of the role of the school in the wider community and the impact of the community on the school.



Skills

By the end of the module the students should have developed professional skills in:

1) utilising secure curriculum knowledge to plan and teach lessons and sequences of lessons which build on prior knowledge, challenge all learners and take into account assessment and evaluation findings
2) using a range of assessment, monitoring and record-keeping strategies effectively and knowing how to report progress to parents
3) planning homework and other out-of-class work to extend and consolidate learning;
4) implementing a range of teaching strategies and resources taking practical account of diversity and promoting equality and inclusion;
5) establishing a clear framework for classroom discipline in order to manage the learners’ behaviour constructively and to promote their self-control and independence in a safe and purposeful environment;
6) evaluating the impact of their teaching on the progress of the learners and modifying planning and classroom practice where necessary;
7) working and communicating with colleagues to share the development of effective practice;
8) reflecting on their progress, critically analysing their practice and setting targets for further development.
