Brief Description This module aims to develop and extend the students teaching skills drawing from their learning in other PGP modules. Students will undertake a 1-week induction period followed by 5 serial days and a 28 day block.
Indicative Syllabus Students will build on their knowledge and understanding of a range of teaching and learning issues related to current practice in the workplace and beyond. Whilst in school they are supported by the class teacher and student mentor. They are assigned a Link Tutor from the University who will visit them 4 times during School Experience to observe their teaching, scrutinise their files, discuss their progress with school staff and offer the student support and advice. Their learning is structured through a combination of observations and teaching activities with individuals, small groups and whole class. Students also undertake prescribed school-based tasks. They will be encouraged to make links between theory and practice by reflecting on their observations and experience in the classroom. They will be expected to take responsibility for their own professional development by acting upon feedback and advice By the end of this module the students will be expected to undertake planned teaching activities with groups and the whole class for approximately 60% of the teaching week.
Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

This module enables students to extend their professional knowledge and understanding of:

1) the continuum of learning from Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3 as appropriate;
2) the statutory legislation and other relevant initiatives related to the primary curriculum in England and Wales and ECM;
3) the standards for Qualified Teacher Status set out in the revised standards for the recommendation for QTS (2007) through reflecting on and evaluating their practice and progress;
4) the processes of curriculum planning and implementation through observation and participation in a real context over a period of time – planning individual lessons and sequences of lessons which increasingly demonstrate continuity and progression;
5) the impact of their teaching on the progress of all learners through working alongside colleagues to evaluate and modify their planning and classroom practice where necessary;
6) school duties, extra curricular activities, parents meetings and so on by becoming involved in these as appropriate;
7) relevant policies, practice and legislation concerning inclusive education and personalised provision for learners through working with colleagues;
8) the principles underpinning the creation of a purposeful and safe learning environment;
9) a range of teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies and knowing how and when to adapt them.

Skills

By the end of the module the students should have further extended their professional skills in:

1) undertaking a series of school-based tasks including teaching and structured observations in order to identify effective teaching, classroom organisation and management;
2) their own teaching; and be able to demonstrate an understanding of statutory requirements and cross-curricular opportunities to promote learning in order to assess, plan, implement, resource, manage and evaluate effectively in the workplace;
3) using a range of formative assessment strategies to inform lesson plans and sequences of lessons;
4) making links between current theory and practice;
5) demonstrating the positive values, attitudes and behaviour which they expect from the learners and challenge any stereotypical views they may have;
6) using positive approaches to managing classroom behaviour;
7) promoting children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development throughout their teaching;
8) promoting children’s well-being both in the workplace and beyond to ensure the success of all learners;
