Brief Description | This module develops a critical appreciation and understanding of psychological theories and the related research in physical activity and health. In the context of the module, key concepts will also be critically evaluated, including: self efficacy, self esteem, body image, gender, and aspects of mental health. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with contemporary based interventions for active and sedentary populations, including motivational interviewing techniques. |
Indicative Syllabus | a) Theories of health behaviour and health behaviour change that influence uptake and maintenance of physical activity. b) The relationship between physical activity, self-esteem, body image, and the recognition of key gender differences. c) The link between physical activity and mental health in clinical and non-clinical populations. d) The practical application of motivational interviewing. |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically appraise the key theories of health behaviour change;
2. Identify and critically examine key concepts of the self and their relation to physical activity behaviour;
3. Critically evaluate issues of gender difference and other individual differences relating to physical activity engagement;
4. Critically examine mental health and mental health problems and their prevalence within society;
5. Evaluate and appraise the use of physical activity for mental health treatment and promotion within health services and the community;
6. Identify and critically evaluate theory based interventions designed for the adoption and maintenance of physical activity, both at individual and group level, within health services and the community.
