Brief Description This module is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to organise, manage and deliver a Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation programme within a community setting. It will be based on the national guidelines for cardiac rehabilitation which promote evidence-based practice for individuals who have had a known cardiac event. Students will be equipped with knowledge of aspects of cardiac disease and surgical techniques, be exposed to the multi-disciplinary nature of effective cardiac rehabilitation services and have the opportunity for experiential learning from a module team who are involved directly in community-based cardiac rehabilitation settings.
Indicative Syllabus The module will examine: a) Phases I, II and III of cardiac rehabilitation as a means of providing background knowledge and context relevant to Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase IV. b) Cardiac rehabilitation practice including the origins and processes of the holistic approach to rehabilitation throughout the cardiac rehabilitation stages, focussing specifically on community-based Phase IV programmes. c) Cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors for health and longevity. d) Surgical techniques and strategies employed for the maintenance of cardiac patients’ well being. e) The development of a Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation programme within the community. f) The multi-professional nature of cardiac rehabilitation services in Britain. g) Phase IV programming and prescription for cardiac patients who have proceeded through cardiac rehabilitation phases I, II and III. h) The management of special considerations and emergency procedures.
Learning Outcomes On completion of the module students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate knowledge at, or near the current limits of understanding, concerning cardiac rehabilitation processes. 2) Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the implications of coronary heart disease for exercise prescription. 3) Assess critically the range of conditions eligible for referral to a Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation course. 4) Evaluate the relevance of medication to coronary heart disease and the implications of such medication for exercise prescription. 5) Demonstrate critical appreciation of the interrelationships between professionals involved in the cardiac rehabilitation process. 6) Synthesise information from cardiac units in secondary care to provide an effective cardiac rehabilitation programme for patients from a diverse range of cardiac problems. 7) Negotiate and communicate with medical professionals regarding cardiac patients to ensure a quality cardiac rehabilitation plan for patients. 8) Appraise the safety procedures required to run safe and effective cardiac rehabilitation courses in the community. 9) Evaluate the effectiveness of a cardiac rehabilitation course.
