Brief Description | This module develops a critical appreciation of evidenced based practice within the context of physical activity interventions for health. The module examines the philosophy underpinning the concept of evidence and examines its relationship with policy and practice. Through its focus on a holistic understanding of evidence the module will enable students to appreciate and make an informed contribution to the development and evaluation of health enhancing physical activity interventions within health care and the community. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will examine: a) The concept of evaluation in health promotion; b) Models of evaluation and their application within health promotion and physical activity interventions; c) Physical activity interventions within health care, for example physical activity in mental health services, exercise referral schemes, falls prevention exercise programmes; d) Physical activity interventions within the community, for example active workplaces, walking programmes, green gyms; e) Contemporary issues for the implementation, evaluation and enhancement of the emerging evidence base for physical activity interventions. |
Learning Outcomes | On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge at, or near, the current limits of understanding concerning the concept, and models of, evaluation.
2. Contextualise the development and delivery of evidenced based physical activity interventions within wider health policies and health care.
3. Identify and critically evaluate the current evidence base for interventions used in the enhancement of health through physical activity.
4. Demonstrate critical awareness of the ethical considerations pertinent to the development of evidenced based practice in physical activity.
5. Design, and plan an evaluation of, an effective physical activity intervention for the improvement of public health.
