Brief Description | This module provides a forum for the critical examination of the principal policies that have informed contemporary physical activity and health practice in the UK and internationally. It focuses on the analysis of policy developments and their implementation by physical activity and health-related organisations and partnerships at international, national and local levels. The module will enable students to undertake critical analysis of policy documents and to assess the effectiveness of policy implementation in improving public health. The module will draw on recent and current policy initiatives as case studies of the State’s role in promoting physical activity and health. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will examine: a) the structure of physical activity-related health provision in the UK and in other appropriate international contexts b) the emergence of health education and promotion in the current context of public health policy and concerns over health inequalities c) the development of public health strategic priorities and policies related to physical activity and health d) the changing roles and working practices of key health organisations and their partners involved in public health e) the inter-relationships between policy makers, purchasers and providers in physical activity and health |
Learning Outcomes | On completing this module students should be able to:
1) critically review the structures and roles of international, national and local agencies with responsibilities for physical activity related health policy
2) evaluate the national and local implementation of physical activity-related health policy
3) critically appraise the success of recent policy interventions and their effectiveness in addressing health inequalities and health improvement issues
4) present informed, evidenced arguments, verbally and in writing, drawing on relevant theory, social policy and evidence-based practice in physical activity and health
