Brief Description

The module offers a holistic and pragmatic approach to studying the affective, cognitive, behavioural, and physiological systems within a person and how these systems impact upon self and others. The module will appeal to students from all divisions in psychology who wish to develop their understanding of mental well-being on a personal, client and organisational level within professional practice. The module will enhance students’ awareness of how their own experience and characteristics may impact upon their work with service users, organisations, clients, and stakeholders. Three fundamental areas will be explored: 1) the use of self as an essential element in psychological practice; 2) working with clients in therapeutic encounters; and 3) understanding mental well-being within an organisational context including the  intra and intergroup processes that lead to functioning or dysfunctioning organisations and teams. Conceptual frameworks of attachment theory are a theme flowing throughout the module, considering disturbances in personality that cause personal, occupational and social disruption.  Students will gain experience in the practice of Mindfulness as a therapeutic way to enhance human potential and as a treatment for dealing with overwhelming emotions, depression, anxiety and other conditions. The role of resilience, protective factors and positive emotions will also be explored in their critical role in contributing to psychological and physical well-being.
