Brief Description

This module provides an overview of the contribution of counselling and advice in the workplace and in the processes of career planning and development, examining both the theory and practice of pastoral and careers guidance, and psychological perspectives on development and learning.

Indicative Syllabus

Major theoretical positions in counselling, and their relevance to advice services within the workplace;

Theories of occupational choice and career development, and their relevance to people development;

Personal and Career Development Planning, and tools for assisting in career choice and development;

Current issues: giving employee feedback, multicultural and minority concerns, counselling in the context of conflict, bullying and harassment.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts which give insight into the successful support and guidance of the individual in the workplace;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of different development intervention techniques at an individual, team and organisational level;
  3. Assess and advise on interventions which address current issues in the workplace for which psychology can be a resource for interpretation and resolution;
  4. Use a range of cognitive skills using theory and practical insight to support people development, in the context of their work roles and the organisation’s goals;
  5. Reflect critically on theories of occupational choice and the use of methods and tools for careers guidance.
