Brief Description

This module covers two main themes. First, it explores the motivations for change within organisations, and how effective change may be managed, covering both hard and soft systems models.  Second, it considers theory and applications in the areas of employee relations, considering challenges such as motivation, conflict, power, diversity, bullying and harassment.  Case studies are used to highlight the role of the psychologist in contributing to the development of successful organisations.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. Overview of organisational psychology: management and organisational behaviour theories, practices and philosophies;
  2. Change in organisations: the reasons why organisations have to change; hard and soft systems models of change management; the role of managers, leaders and change agents; the role of the psychologist in change management and organisational culture;
  3. Employee relations: contractual arrangements; employee motivation; conflict, bullying and harassment; the role of the psychologist in motivation and conflict resolution.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical appreciation of concepts in organisational psychology, and  the reasons for organisational change;
  2. Assess different organisational change intervention techniques and where they are applicable;
  3. Critically evaluate the factors affecting employee relations and motivation, and analyse and assess employee relations within an organisation;
  4. Identify the implications of conflict and power in employment relations, and recommend techniques for prevention, resolution and management of conflict;
  5. Recognise the impact of organisational change on employees, and recommend and use a range of practical skills taking employees through the change process.
