Brief Description

This module presents theories of and practices in personnel selection, training, performance appraisal and career development. A review of job, task and organisational analysis leads to a review of the use of interviews, psychometric testing and Assessment Centres.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in a simulated assessment centre.  Attention is given to issues of reliability, validity, fairness and equal opportunities, and new paradigms such as emotional intelligence, internet-based selection, expert systems for careers guidance, and 360 degree evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skills of critical evaluation in applying theories of career development and appraisal in workplace contexts;
  2. Make informed and justifiable decisions on the choice of selection and appraisal methods in the workplace, with due regard for reliability, validity, fairness and equal opportunities;
  3. Design and implement selection methodologies and appraisal systems including selected psychometric tests and assessment centres, and interpret the results;
  4. Identify training and development needs and design relevant intervention strategies.
