Brief Description

This module focuses on the role of biopsychosocial factors in occupational and organisational health. It considers several important current issues in the workplace which challenge the occupational psychologist, including human-machine interaction, design of environments, occupational health and safety, stress and violence at work.  Case studies drawing on staff research and consultancy expertise are used to explore risk assessment, risk management and organisational intervention strategies.   

Indicative Syllabus
  1. Human machine interaction: how computers and machines impact upon the workplace, including design of visual displays, Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge-based systems.
  2. Health, safety and health psychology in workplace settings: the psychology of work, disability, occupational stress, illness, legal contexts and intervention strategies.
  3. Case studies of situation awareness and decision-making in work contexts, with a particular focus on situations with a high degree of risk.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the central concepts of human machine interaction and their implications for workplace settings;
  2. Appreciate the impact of factors compromising health and well-being at work and apply concepts of organisational health to specific areas of current concern including workplace stress;
  3. Assess risk in the workplace, and devise interventions to manage it;
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the challenges of, and research into, selected work situations where decision-making takes place in a context of high risk.
