Brief Description

This module provides a broad understanding of the individual’s psychological functioning, drawing on a range of perspectives to consider issues around personality, intelligence, and psychological disorder.  This provides the basis for appreciating the application of psychology to real world problems in a range of contexts which will be explored via case studies and students’ own professional experience.

  • Key approaches to psychology.
  • Person development.
  • Personality theories and measurement.
  • Intelligence theories and measurement.
  • Psychometrics and psychological assessment.
  • Debates in individual difference psychology.
  • Abnormality and dysfunction.
  • Applications of psychology to selected areas, e.g. business, crime and health.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of diverse perspectives on the psychology of the individual;
  2. Critically evaluate competing theories and models of individual differences;
  3. Account for the bases of psychological abnormality;
  4. Demonstrate skills of psychological measurement and psychometrics;
  5. Assess, synthesise and apply psychological theory in practical contexts;
  6. Engage in debate as to appropriate understandings of individual psychology.
