Brief Description

The module aims to support the student's professional development as  a reflective and evidence-based counsellor by developing understanding of and skills for literature review and critique, for research and evaluation.

Indicative Syllabus

This is an opportunity for students to carry out a significant self-directed study on a negotiated counselling topic. Students may choose from a variety of research and evaluation approaches and methods presented in NS6602. Tutorial support will be provided.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding including substantial knowledge and critical evaluation of primary texts and scholarly literature relating to the chosen topic in counselling.
  2.  identify, analyse and critically evaluate research evidence relating to that selected area of interest in the field of counselling.
  3. select appropriate, epistemologically sound research methods in relation to identified research purposes and justify their employment, recognising the need to consider aspects of gender, and cultural and ethical issues in their research design where appropriate.
  4. present, analyse and evaluate data in an appropriate and relevant manner and present findings clearly and in an appropriate format. 
  5.  draw appropriate conclusions from data analysis and set them in their academic and professional context.
  6. produce a piece of work which is clearly written and well structured.
