Brief Description

This is an opportunity for students to carry out a significant research study on a negotiated topic. Research methods utilised may range from field experiments, survey work, and observation, to discourse analysis, analysis of secondary data, and historical research. Students design and conduct a substantial study and present a final report. Students are matched with advisors who have knowledge of the specific topic under investigation.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will be allocated a tutor with experience in the area of interest and an agreed title for the investigation will be formulated. Students will:

  1. prepare a poster on the literature review, intended methodology and mid-point progress
  2. undertake a research investigation of a chosen subject
  3. write a report on the subject of their investigation
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an increased knowledge and understanding of a chosen area in Criminology
  2. Identify, justify and evaluate the use of appropriate research styles and enquiry methods in a context of criminological enquiry.
  3. Gather evidence in a systematic and rigorous manner and to use it to critically evaluate theoretical
  4. Develop a critical approach towards the use of theory and methodology.
