Brief Description

This module explores the constitution, structures and day-to-day functioning of the criminal justice system in England and Wales through critical comparison with other jurisdictions.  It considers the rationale for studying cross-national issues in criminal justice, and provides students with a knowledge base for understanding the different ways in which justice is defined and operationalised around the world. The module will also explore the use of imprisonment in England and Wales, going on to measure its efficacy and its use elsewhere.  It will also consider alternatives to imprisonment including the use of the death penalty. The module will also address concerns about human rights on an international basis.
