NS6205: Microbial Biotechnology

Module Title Microbial Biotechnology
Module Code NS6205
Module Tutor Sally Rogers
School Natural and Social Sciences
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites None
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description

This module will take an in-depth look at how microbes and their metabolic pathways and products can be used in biotechnology. The module will be particularly concerned with environmental biotechnology, covering for example, bioremediation and biomining, but the module will also allow students to develop their own interests in other aspects of biotechnology. This module develops concepts, methods and approaches taught in NS5203 Microbe-Human Interactions, and complements certain aspects of NS6204 Pollution in Ecological Systems.

Indicative Syllabus

Through lectures, laboratory practical sessions and workshops, and with the use of case studies, certain microbes used in biotechnology will be explored. The use of genetically manipulated organisms, biotechnologically important enzymes and specific biochemical pathways will be studied. By taking ethical concerns into account, we will also explore where biotechnology may offer an answer to contemporary problems by delving into the past and evaluating the future of the biotechnology industry.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module will be able to

  1. Critically evaluate the role of micro-organisms in specific biotechnological processes
  2. Explain the complex processes behind the development of genetically manipulated organisms
  3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of how biochemical pathways relate to biotechnological applications
  4. Conduct a comprehensive search for original research literature pertinent to a selected area of microbiology and biotechnology
  5. Judge the relative support for different perspectives in potentially controversial issues based on a critical and objective analysis of published research
  6. Communicate complex scientific principles and ideas effectively
