Brief Description | This module explores relationships between power, policy and practice in social policy. It includes critical examination of the policy-making process and its importance in an industrialised society. There is particular focus on policy outcomes: their differential impact on differentgroups, tensions between welfare and control and the consequences when policies collide. Examples of current policy-making issues are considered. |
Indicative Syllabus | Social constructions of ‘needs’ and ‘problems’ Theories of power and the state Selected policies in practice e.g. conflicts between crime control and child welfare Case studies of policy and practice from Britain and USA Differential impact of current policy and practice in creating injustice for particular groups in terms of e.g. age, sexuality, social class |
