Brief Description | In this module gender will be used as an analytical approach to the social sciences and social life. It aims to examine the diverse ways in which femininities and masculinities are constructed and culturally represented in society by different groups at different times. The relationships between gender, sex and sexuality will be interrogated. Explanations for continuities and changes in sexual divisions will be considered. |
Indicative Syllabus | Gender as a visible and invisible category Constructions and consequences of gender in everyday life e.g. education, labour market and mass culture Gender as an analytical approach to social issues e.g. crime, health, family ‘breakdown’ Masculine and feminine identities: stereotypes and challenges Sexualities and gender Feminist movements and men’s movements: facts and fictions |
