Brief Description

The module will build on the theme of Conflict & Development introduced in NS4303 Living in a Globalised World. It provides students with the opportunity to examine the geographies of conflict and global development in the 21st Century and engage with the theory and practice of conflict management and sustainable development in a range of global contexts. This module provides useful preparation for NS6303 The Postcolonial World.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will outline the theories of development, conflict and security including key concepts of the importance of conflict and security to development and the importance of development to addressing conflict resolution, prevention and peace-building. It will draw on examples of conflict, such as state-state, civil war, community urban conflict and gangs, piracy, terrorism and corruption. It will draw on issues in development, such as poverty, livelihoods and aid. The module will use case studies such as Sierra Leone, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Congo and Somalia. Students will learn about both the theory and the practice of international responses to conflict and development.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to: 1. Discuss knowledgeably key ideas in conflict and development 2. Critically-understand the application of development interventions and conflict management methods 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of participation in development and conflict resolution 4. Display skills in conflict management and resolution 5. Demonstrate a high-level of ability to express their thinking in oral and written form
