Brief Description

This module aims to develop field experience and project management skills in a challenging and unfamiliar environment. Students must elect one field destination from a prescribed list of locations, primarily sited overseas and allied to the academic themes of their course. Students will gain a detailed understanding of the human and / or physical environment of their elected destination and undertake a group-executed, yet independently-written piece of field research.

 

The module builds on the Fieldwork skills pathway introduced in NS4301 Introductory Geographical Research & Fieldwork or NS4401 Introductory Research & Fieldwork in Social Sciences. Along with NS5308 Geographical Enquiry or NS5402 Data Collection and Data Analysis, it provides good preparation for the Dissertation at Level 6.

Indicative Syllabus

Campus and/or VLE-based briefings and tutorials

Up to 14 days fieldwork, typically overseas and within vacation periods

Field-based lectures on landscape specific to destination

Acquisition of field skills allied to academic themes afforded by destination

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the theories, concepts and literature related to their project and study area
  2. Execute a rigorous, safe and ethically-sound piece of original, field-based research
  3. Act and react with limited direction in a field context within agreed bounds
  4. Interact effectively within a team to successfully acquire a comprehensive, coherent and relevant data set
  5. Analyse, evaluate, communicate and contextualise findings
