Brief Description

Building on knowledge gained at Level 4, this module further develops the knowledge of statistical, experimental and qualitative techniques necessary for carrying out a psychology investigation at level 6

Indicative Syllabus

Topics to be covered by this module include: -

Quantitative and qualitative approaches; their relative strengths and weaknesses and primary applications.

Quantitative approaches will include parametric tests up to, and including, ANOVA and standard multiple regression.

Qualitative approaches will include exploration of a broad range of approaches, which may include but is not limited to observational techniques, textual analysis e.g. thematic and discourse analysis and the Action Research Cycle.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to demonstrate the following:

  1. an understanding of statistical tests including when to use which test, the differences between tests for difference and tests for association
  2. an awareness of design issues in quantitative investigation in psychology.
  3. an awareness of the issues and techniques involved in qualitative methods
  4. an ability to conduct qualitative interpretation and formally report this.
  5. an ability to design, analyse and report quantitative studies
  6. an ability to use relevant computer packages for statistical analysis.
