Brief Description

This module aims to equip students with basic research and field skills. This foundation, delivered by Academic Review Tutors, will encompass learning and personal development. Such skills will be required for successful completion of an undergraduate degree, prove transferable to sectors beyond academia and will engender life-long learning. Taking an enquiry-led approach, students will be introduced to the process, pace and production of a piece of group-based field research.

This module forms part of the Research and Fieldwork pathway, preparing students for NS5301 Fieldwork Elective and NS6333Geography Dissertation.

Locating, citing and referencing appropriate sources

Preparation and execution of assessments

Academic and professional career planning

Scientific enquiry

Basic Mapping and GIS

Basic field skills in natural & social science

Group-based research design, planning, execution and reporting

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Articulate the rationale, aim and objectives of a research project

2. Identify, reference and demonstrate broad understanding of relevant, appropriate literature that informs methodology and contributes to discussion

3. Plan and undertake group-based research and reports assessing the reliability and geographical implications of findings within prescribed research limits

4. Operate with limited autonomy under direction in a field context, applying basic geographical skills

5. Work effectively with others and recognise the factors that affect team performance

6. Demonstrate awareness of personal capabilities and aspirations in key areas and engage in self-guided development activity
