Brief Description

This module introduces the process of scientific thinking and key scientific methods, including laboratory and field techniques. Methods of data collection are covered, as are skills for locating current research, writing scientific papers, and referencing appropriately. The module also forms the basis for personal development planning provision in the biological sciences, and develops a range of learning and personal skills. The module provides the foundation skills needed for successful study across the Animal Biology and Biology degree programmes.

Indicative Syllabus

There are three elements to this module: skills, fieldwork and personal development planning (PDP)

The first element develops key skills for the bioscience degrees, including preparing essays, scientific papers, and presentations. This element also includes time in the laboratory, where students will focus on experimental design and the effective execution of experiments.

The second element introduces students to the principles of processes of Personal Development Planning (PDP), and addresses learning and personal skills development. Key skills such as literature searches and referencing will be developed. In addition, students will be required to reflect on their learning and employability skills, and plan for ongoing personal and career development.

The third element is field work, which allows the development of key field skills, as well as cementing PDP skills such as team building and group work.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Understand and demonstrate the importance of effective study skills to successful study

2. Demonstrate a solid grounding in laboratory and field techniques and the ability to apply these to specific projects with tutor guidance

3. Demonstrate a range of key transferable skills, including communication and teamwork

4. Understand the importance of PDP and transferable skills to employability and engage in personal development planning, and planning for employability

5. Produce high quality coursework utilising good sources of scientific literature that are referenced appropriately
