Brief Description

This module is designed to enable eligible practitioners to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes to undertake safe, effective and cost-effective prescribing practice in partnership with patient/client, carers and members of the multi-disciplinary prescribing team. Students will develop a critical understanding of the underpinning decision making that guides safe prescribing practice. The legal, professional and ethical issues involved in prescribing practice will be analysed to ensure that practitioners work within a clear framework that ensure professional accountability in practice.

All assessment is non-compensable and students will have to pass all elements in order to get a pass grade for the module.

Students will attend a combination of study days (which may be arranged in blocks) and complete on-line learning and distance learning material. Students will need to be proficient in using IT.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine:

  • Review of consultation, history taking, decision-making and therapy decision processes, including referral pathways
  • Influences on and the psychology of prescribing
  • Prescribing within a team context, which includes the patient/client
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to non-medical prescribing
  • Legal, policy and ethical aspects of prescribing practice
  • Professional accountability and responsibility
  • Prescribing within the public health context.Prescribing within a supplementary prescribing framework
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

  • Critically analyse a variety of approaches to the systematic and holistic assessment and treatment of patient/client need and demonstrate an ability to appropriately apply these within the context of complex clinical situations
  • Demonstrate competency at clinical decision making, including history taking, within relevant workplace situations
  • Critically explore the influences that can affect prescribing practice within complex clinical situations
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the legal, professional and ethical issues that underpin prescribing practice
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the roles and complexity of the relationships between the professionals and others involved in the safe prescribing, supplying and administration of medicines
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse the theoretical and practical factors which will influence and impact on prescribing practice within complex clinical situationsDevelop a clinical management plan appropriate for complex clinical situations within legislative requirements
