Brief Description The module explores present and future applications for multimedia and virtual reality in commercial, educational and research environments. The module, although core for multimedia specialists, may be taken by a student who has completed MU210 and who wishes to critically explore multimedia applications and implications.
Indicative Syllabus The philosophical background to critically evaluating the economic, social and cultural impact of multimedia applications in a variety of industrial and commercial areas.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) critically evaluate alternative perspectives on the appropriateness of the application of multimedia in different situations,
b) investigate the uses of multimedia by a named organisation,
c) consolidate a large amount of information about an organisation in a variety of formats and extract relevant material,
d) critically evaluate multimedia applications in relation to its ability to inform, motivate and persuade,
e) propose and defend innovative solutions to information management problems which involve multimedia,
f) critically evaluate applications of multimedia with respect to the ethical, cultural and social aspects of the situation.



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Communication and Literacy: for a named organisation produce a working multimedia presentation to illustrate the current and proposed uses of multimedia; by writing an essay express ideas in an analytical form and synthesise arguments to support a viewpoint.
Problem solving: identify the business or organisational problems which the use of multimedia could address; propose and justify solutions.
Independent Learning and working: gather information about an organisation and disseminate it via a multimedia presentation; research an essay topic and incorporate different viewpoints to demonstrate an appreciation of alternative views.
Working with others: discussion of ethical and social issues in small group and plenary session; observation of multimedia presentations of peer group.
Information and Communications Technology: all work is word processed and the presentation involves the use of a projector.
Specific vocational skills: legal and ethical constraints on business multimedia production; using multimedia in a live presentation to propose further work, time management for production projects.

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact: 20% including lectures and seminars.
(Introductory lectures will set the scene for the current range of multimedia applications and areas of active research. Guest speakers from the multimedia industry will be invited to contribute. A student will spend the majority of their time in detailed examination of a given application or current research area in multimedia, which will culminate in a seminar supported by a multimedia presentation.)
