Brief Description

The aim of the module is to enable a critical understanding of the role of P.R. in managing relationships between organizations and their ‘publics’ such as consumers, the media, the wider community and the government. Incorporating contributions from the study of communications, language and media, this module will equip students with the management and technical skills necessary to operate in a communications environment.

Indicative Syllabus

Areas of study include reputation and image management, crisis management,  relationships with the media, persuasion and propaganda, internal communication, social media and celebrity culture. We will be analyzing how P.R. tools such as press releases, sponsorship, publicity stunts, events and interviews with CEOs can be utilized in relation to the areas specified above.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the scope of P.R. beyond the publicity role
  2. Evaluate the responsibilities of P.R. in facilitating relationships between the organizations and its various publics
  3. Critically appraise the role of PR within the wider marketing communications mix
  4. Analyze and evaluate complex issues of existing PR campaigns
  5. Demonstrate communication and literacy skills
  6. Develop  arguments based upon sound research and evidence
