Brief Description This is a compulsory module for the FdSc Mental Health Practice, and builds upon the key components of mental health care in the community, examined in MHP 201. The main focus of this module is communication and supporting relationships with mental health service users and carers; enabling service users and carers to manage change, and an examination of team and joint working in mental health services. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.
Indicative Syllabus This module will cover the following topics:- - key principles in relation to communication with mental health service users and their carers, family, and friends; - the importance of relationships and factors that can impact upon them; - theories of change and a variety of ways individuals can be supported to manage change in their lives, and how they may be supported in managing change; - how positive working environments may be created; - a wide examination of how to promote effective working within and between agencies.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Explain the principles relating to communication and relationships with service users;
b) Evaluate the barriers to communication and relationships with service users and carers;
c) Contrast the positive and negative aspects of relationships, and the factors that can impact upon them;
d) Distinguish between the positive and negative changes that may be experienced by people with mental health problems, their carers, family and friends;
e) Differentiate the different types of team and joint working;
f) Synthesise ways that an individual worker can contribute to a positive team working environment.


ii. Skills
. On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Communicate and sustain relationships;
b) Use problem solving skills to support individuals in their relationships and through change;
c) Work in a team to create positive working environments.
